THE DEVELOPMENT OF WEAPONOLGY HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE OLD WORLD AND A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARMS AND ARMOR STUDIES IN EUROPE UNTIL THE END OF THE 19th CENTURY
The article presents the definition of weaponology as an additional historical subject, and analyzes the history of the study of weapons historiography. The author examines the origins of the history of arms and armor from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century and identifies the main periods of its development.
The author defines such periods: primary (by the beginning of the twentieth century); from the beginning of the 20th century to 1955 (the rapid development of academic research, the allocation of the main areas of weapons research within certain scientific disciplines); 1955-1960 (changing views on the development of military affairs of the Early Modern period, further development of arms and armor researches, the emergence of the concept of “military revolution” and “evolutionary development” in Europe founded a new understanding of the history of development and use of weapons in Europe); from the 1960-s (processes of development of social (and military) anthropology, microhistory, formation of weapons studies as an interdisciplinary direction of historical source studies). This periodization is common to the history of armaments in the Old World and the United States and, with some caveats, can be used to study the history of weaponology in many Asian countries.
The author studied the processes of foundation of large museum’s collections and transition of early weapons researches into a modern scientific discipline. In this regard, the importance of amateur associations and societies, the early market of antiques, the formation of archaeological science, art history and ethnography were stressed. The biographies and works of prominent figures of European weaponology were studied.
The author concluded, that arms and armor studies found their place in the future vast system of historical source studies, already at the initial stage.
